Key Terms and Definitions
Below are a few key words that are commonly used or seen when discussing matters related to college and university admissions:
Postsecondary – refers to education that follows secondary education (). Typically, education at a community college, university or a polytechnic can be categorized as postsecondary.
Undergraduate - refers to levels of post-secondary education up until a degree. Examples of undergraduate programs: Bachelor’s degree, Advanced Diploma, Associate Degree, Post-secondary diploma/certificates Postgraduate – refers to a course or level of study after completion of an undergraduate degree (first degree). Foundation Program – refers to an undergraduate pathway program which caters to students, who may not qualify for direct entry into an undergraduate degree program. Other terms used for foundation programs are Preliminary Year or an International Year One. Pre-Master’s program – refers to a pathway program which caters to graduate students (persons with a first degree) that may not qualify for direct entry into a postgraduate degree program. |
Admission Requirements
When applying to a program, there are academic and, in some cases non-academic requirements, that applicants must submit to be admissible. Below are the typical requirements for post-secondary programs:
Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate(s)- At least 4-5 passes
CSEC Mathematics (general) and English A (English Language) are usually mandatory. Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination Diploma – At least six (6) unit passes OR; Associate Degree at a recognized Community College – with a grade point average of at least 2.5 OR; One year of University at a recognized institution – with a grade point average of at least 2.5 or grade C |
